Most people have heard of Medicare, but don’t know much about it. Basically, it’s a government program that provides health insurance for those 65 and over — and for people under 65 with special circumstances, like a disability.
Medicare Basics
Here's a quick overview of Medicare and what it covers.
Part A
HOSPITALIZATION

Part A covers hospitalization, skilled nursing facilities and other inpatient care.
Part B
MEDICAL SERVICES

Part B covers doctor visits, lab tests and other outpatient services.
Part C
MEDICARE ADVANTAGE

Part C is also known as “Medicare Advantage.” These are private insurance plans that work with Original Medicare.
Part D
PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

Part D is prescription drug coverage, which is not covered under Original Medicare.
Important Information
The program begins with “Original Medicare” and has two parts — Part A for hospitalization and Part B for medical services.
IMPORTANT: Part A & Part B alone won’t cover all your healthcare needs. In fact, approximately 20% of medical expenses plus 100% of prescription drug costs aren’t covered at all.
Fortunately, Medicare has private insurance options that can help fill the gap. They’re called Part C and Part D. And they’re available from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.
